Golf Irons

Golf irons make up the largest portion of your club selection. There are 3 woods in a typical set, and one putter. This compares to a total of nine irons if you count the pitching and sand wedges. Why would anyone need so many clubs? They are available in case they are needed.

The range on your irons varies from drives of about 200 yards to chips of just a few yards. The irons are divided into three categories. The 1-4 irons are considered long irons, the 5-8 irons are the mid range irons, and the 9 iron, pitching wedge, and sand wedge are short irons.

The long irons are used in place of a driver. In many cases a five wood and a one iron have identical range; the wood is used from the tee where the iron would be used from the fairway. Your mid range irons are great for a shot where precision is key, the lofted shots to land a ball on the green without rolling it off. The short irons are used to surmount obstacles, such as a tree or sand trap. They provide a high loft and minimal forward impetus.
