Golf Balls

The game of golf is one of the older modern sports. Golf as we know it originated in Scotland, and many of the terms we associate with golf are Scottish in origin. The first eighteen-hole golf course was in Scotland and the first golf clubs were formed there. In this instance I am referring to the club as a society founded around the game of golf, rather than the stick used to hit a golf ball. The first tournaments were also held in Scotland, with different cities competing for a cup, or prize. From Scotland golf spread to England, and from England it spread to the rest of Europe and the United States.

The Scottish can be prickly folk, and when their claims regarding golf are challenged it is a good way to bring out the thorniest in them. There is evidence that games similar to golf were played in the Netherlands and ancient China. Regardless of whether the Scottish came up with the concept of golf or imported it, they are the ones that refined it to the game we know and play today.

The golf equipment you need to play is simple in theory but can be exceedingly complex in practice. The clubs are divided into three categories, sometimes four. The three categories are the woods, or drivers; the irons; and the putters. Some consider the wedges a separate category from the irons but I will treat them as a sub set of irons. You can find many great deals online, or at your local outdoor equipment supplier.

Drivers are used for the tee shot on most holes, they have a range of well over 200 yards if properly hit. Modern drivers have an enlarged head and are actually lighter in weight than the irons to allow a user to swing them with less effort. Drivers can also be used on the fairway when there is still a sizable chunk of course left to go.

After drivers come the irons, including the wedges. Irons are the most versatile portion of your golf set, and it takes a high level of skill to use them all well. Low numbered irons act much like a driver, with a slightly lower range and a higher loft. The biggest reason to use a one iron over a three or five wood  is usually that the ball is low enough to the ground that you could not get the wood around the ball and would end up hitting the ball down, limiting its travel. At the opposite extreme are the nine iron and wedges. These clubs are designed to give the ball a lot of loft- and backspin- when hit properly. They are used to get the ball around an obstacle, such as a tree or the lip of a bunker.

The often neglected baby of your golf clubs is your putter. Because your game isn’t over till the ball goes into the hole, a putter is one of the most valuable clubs you can own. A good putter will easily pay for itself in a lowered stroke count, but only if your golf swing is in proper form. Unlike the swings used for drivers and irons, on a putt you want a steady application of force and a smooth follow through, almost as if you were performing the action under water.

If you love to golf and love to travel there is nothing better than a golf getaway package. These packages allow you to spend the weekend in a resort hotel and include a round of golf. From Pebble Beach, California to Waialae, Hawaii you can enjoy a fantastic location with a fantastic round of golf. Other gifts and accessories for your golfer include club covers, trick balls, new tees, shoes, a golf bag, or even a golf cart for the truly die hard golfer.
